About ArtBike!

What is ArtBike!?

ArtBike! is a community arts and healthy-living project created in 2008 that combines art with cycling. The main planks of ArtBike! are to create and enjoy art in combination with riding bicycles.

This year, 2016, is the first year of many for ArtBike! in Philadelphia. It is held during October and provides a ramp up to the amazing Philly Bike Expo, held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, Nov. 5-6, 2016 (7th annual edition).

People create bike-related art which can be displayed in local galleries, or photographed out on the streets to create a collage of photos depicting Philly as a city of art and bikes. Rides, both organized and spontaneous are able to follow an ArtBike! trail in Philadelphia.

Who participates?
Schools, art projects and organizations, art galleries, community groups, makers, builders, cyclists, cycling groups. Artisans, activists and alternatives are welcome!

When is ArtBike!?
ArtBike! kicks off in Philadelphia, late October. October 28th, a ride starting at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, followed by an art gallery showing of work by New York cycling artist Taliah Lempert and others, at Firth & Wilson Transport Cycles. November 4th, ArtBike! party at Firth & Wilson Transport Cycles. November 5th, ride to the Philly Bike Expo from Firth & Wilson Transport Cycles.

Where is ArtBike! ?
In 2016 ArtBike! is in galleries in the Fish Town and Old City neighborhoods, and in bike shops and galleries and on the streets around the PA Convention Center. In future years it is intended to take place in other areas too.

The grand finale of ArtBike! is at the Philly Bike Expo where there will be a display area for selected contributing artists to show their art in a commercial setting in front of a crowd numbering in the thousands.

How does ArtBike! work?
Gallery owners will receive and display exhibits. These will come direct from the artist or artisan.

The Philly Bike Expo publicizes these exhibits and their venues, encouraging the Philly cycling community to go on an art walk around the participating galleries. Art items can be offered for sale if you wish, and who knows? This might be the event that gets a budding artist noticed!

The installation art on the street must be photographed for consideration in the Philly Bike Expo. Submit your photos to phillybikepr@gmail.com so we can promote your work.  The photos can be sold too! Philly Bike Expo and the Philadelphia  City Council will receive reproduction rights to these images to promote the show and the city of Philadelphia  through magazines and websites. The artist will always receive a name credit.

At the Philly Bike Expo, selected artworks will be displayed, along with information about the galleries that participated. ArtBike! plaques will be created to commemorate the event.

Party on…
Then on the night of Friday November 4th  there will be a super fun ArtBike! party where all artists, friends and contributors will gather to celebrate… Art! and Bikes!
Check Facebook.com/artbikeart/ for the latest updates.

Why is ArtBike! happening?
ArtBike! is an effort to create a community buzz about being artistic, creative, healthy and cycling.

It will be happening during the month preceding the Philly Bike Expo, so it is not just a one night or one week thing, but makes a lasting impression on the city of Philly about the greatness of a life filled with Bikes! and Art!

ArtBike will be a collaboration of the city, the community, local galleries, Philly Bike Expo, artists, bike advocates, visitors and whoever else wants to be a part of creating something to feel good about!

Who organizes ArtBike!
ArtBike! was founded by Paul Skilbeck and Laura Brennan, in 2008. It is a creative commons project that can be run anywhere by anyone. The organizers in Philadelphia are Philly Bike Expo, Maria Serrahima and Magda Esposito of Philly Naked Bike Ride, Wes Hanna of Nightcycle Philadelphia, and Firth & Wilson Transport Cycles.
